Parties!

A 75th birthday would not be complete without the fire department showing up. Well in our family that is, it can be rather normal.....because my uncle is a fire fighter here in Abbotsford. Last night though, it was a bit of an embarrassing escapade.

We were having my Grandpa's surprise party here in my building in the Amenities room downstairs. It was decorated, there was great food, there were 75 old people there! (I counted) I pretty much stayed working in the background because there is so much more to do then one would think. There was a program with songs dedicated to my Grandpa, a violin duet by my mom and aunt, a solo by my 2nd cousin (or something), and then it was time for the cake.

One sec, I have to take a moment to expand on the creativeness of the cake. My father is the Grand Marnier cake King, and for big family functions like this, he makes the cake. It is a four layer, iced and decorated cake (sister Jenn helped decorate this time round).....with the special added touch of Grand Marnier.

So, we go to light the cake, the two big candles "7" & "5", and 6 sparklers.......and what do you know, when everyone started singing and Gramps was coming to stand behind the cake.....the fire alarm went off! Looking up, we realized that we were right below the smoke detector. Jenn and I took off to find the building manager, and lo and behold there were people streaming out of one of the buildings. Dang it! The alarm had gone off in the whole other building too!

A bit embarrassed, I went and started explaining to people that there was no fire and no danger. Ooo, I got some mean looks. I hope I don't run into any of them in the parkade, they might run into my car! :)

The fire department still came, even though my uncle called it in and talked to all the appropriate people to let them know it was alright and everything had already been reset. (its handy having a firefighter in the family) The fire fighters came down, bugged my uncle a bit about it, and had some cake (who wouldn't!).

Yes, and now I have procrastinated enough and I must go vaccuum that massive room downstairs and scrub a few toilets so that I get my deposit back! Oh happy day! Oh yeah.
