So, I've been teaching english to two boys for the last week and a half......and I'm enjoying it, but its wearing me out! Its kinda funny, because I went into this thing with what I thought was a prepared schedule for daily activities......uh, no! Meeting these two guys, was almost enough to change everything immediately. I had no idea that I was getting the 'game' class. The one boy has some trouble paying attention, which is a bit of an understatement. The owner/principal of the academy said that he quite possibly has ADD / ADHD, but it is not diagnosed. I am not one to throw labels around, but I am pretty darn certain that he has something like that. I was not prepared for that. I had to re-vamp pretty much everything, come up with games on the spot, and create many more lessons then anticipated. These kids fly through stuff like you wouldn't believe. Once I can get them to concentrate....they are pretty much brilliant.
We had our first huge language barrier yesterday. The academy is run by Christians, and many of the students and teachers are Christians as well. I was given a Bible story book to read through with these boys to work on comprehension. WELL, yesterday the story of Noah and the ark.....ieeee!!! It was hard enough to explain how the water got above the mountains, but that somehow led to who God is, and where He is and if He's a person or a being. Half of those words these kids can't understand! They kept asking the questions though! Even with diagrams and such, I was so glad it was the end of the day because then I could grab one of the Korean speaking teachers and get some help to try to explain things. It is so difficult to try to explain 'God' to these kids when we barely speak the same language. It was quite the conversation. It's amazing how diagrams, actions and body language really DO make all the difference. If I just had my words, I think these kids would learn nothing at all.
Anyway, that was just a neat day. I have only 7 more with them....that's it. I'm over half finished. It feels like I've just begun, and it's already almost gone. Ahhhhhh, that means school is almost starting! Ha ha, just kidding. Still a month and a half left. Um hm, and a roadtrip in there too. Oh yeah.
