A little more to learn...

Walking out of work today I was a witness to a lovely conversation. I couldn't get through the door due to two adults and two children that were blocking it and attempting to do up zippers without the awareness that someone else was waiting. I had a fabulously patient moment. A fellow staff member was seeing them off from the doorway so I stood next to her, waiting my turn to pass through the heated building to the sunshiny outdoors. The one lady (more of a young adult) turns around for one last word, and with a big genuine smile, lets the kindergarten teacher know that she will be coming back to help the next time her niece is in school. Completely thrilled Mrs. Kindergarten exuberantly replies that it would be fabulous to see her again! Now what is it that makes this conversation so lovely to me? The young woman, maybe 23-25 years old, is handicapped and has Cerebral Palsy, and just like how some people's jobs may not define who they are, her handicap does not define who she is. Society assumes that she needs help, whereas she sees where she can help. What if we all saw things her way? Maybe we would hear more lovely conversations...
